Military bases throughout American history have carried the responsibility of being more than just places to house, train, equip, and prepare soldiers for war. In fact, many sites intended for war were used in other ways that also embody the ethos of the American soldier, principles like the soldier’s commitment to protect, defend, and provide sanctuary. In addition to its dual roles as supply depot and refuge, Camp Nelson also served as a hub of recruitment. Formerly enslaved men arrived in droves to sign up and join the Union Army. A hand-rendered illustration styled after the vintage poster art of the 20th century, this design is available as a poster, framed print, metal sign, canvas, or as a set of notecards or postcards. This original national park art and travel art would look great on any wall in the home, or at the workplace.
